  1. Carpenter Decision

    • The Supreme court ruled in the Carpenter vs United States that police need a warrant to access a person's cellphone location history.
    • I would say this ruling would benefit the trust from the public. However there are still avenues for the police to obtain a persons digital location history if done legally which still adds to the disrust of police. With the advancement of technology, police having obtaining digital location history could be paramount to their inestigations and solving crimes
  2. Drones

    • Police have been using drones to conduct aerial surveillance. Drones have been used to survey drug deals and other criminal activites. They have also been used to enforce social distancing in Savannah, GA. Lastly drones have been used a situational awareness tool such as covering large protests.
    • The use of drones is controversial and can be harmful to the relationship between police and the public. The use of drone surveillance can be seen as an intrusion of privacy and targets communities of color. There is also not a national framework for governing use of drones from police.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    • Deep Learning is an artificial intelligence method used to track down drug sellers on Instagram. This type of AI focuses on recognizing patterns in data, such as Instagram poss.
    • Topic Modeling is another method of artificial intelligence. Topic modeling is a form of sorting and matching that finds coversations within a broader desired conversation such as fentanyl or other opiods.
    • These artificial intelligence methods used by police can be harmful as it may be viewed as an intrusion of privacy and another form of "Big Brother."
  4. Facial Recognition Software

    • Facial Recognition Software is a very controversial topic right now. Many believe the software is racist and targets people of color. Many believe it is not accurate enough. The software has regularly been inaccurate of identifying people with darker skin and is prone to false positives. There is also a fear that this software inherently undermines freedom by enabling surveilance of everyone.
    • Facial recogniFacial recognition software improves the power of surveillance. It can help police track a person of interest such as the Boston Marathon Bombers. It can also help police track someone when there is no other known information on the person of interest.
