INTERVIEWS
Definition
- Core: A flexible and powerful data collection tool for obtaining detailed, in-depth information about a topic or subject.
- Purpose: To capture the interviewees' experiences, perspectives, and interpretations that may be inaccessible through other methods like questionnaires (Wilkinson & Birmingham, 2003).
- Output: Generates rich, qualitative, textual data.
Types
- Structured: Formalized; set, pre-determined questions asked in a fixed order.
- Semi-structured: Guided by an interview schedule (list of themes/key questions); allows for flexibility, probing, and follow-up questions to explore emergent topics.
- Unstructured :Conversational; no fixed set of questions; interviewee leads the conversation within the broad research area.
Procedures (The Interview Process)
- Preparation/Design:
- Develop a clear interview guide/schedule aligned with research questions. Select participants using an appropriate method (e.g., purposive sampling). Piloting: Testing the interview guide on a sample group to find problems like unclear questions (Wilkinson & Birmingham, 2003).
- Ethical Considerations:
- Obtain informed consent. Ensure anonymity and confidentiality (especially for sensitive topics). Address the potential for interviewer bias.
- Conducting the Interview:
- Use a high-quality recorder. Capture nuances and non-verbal cues. Probe for better understanding and elaboration.
- Preparation/Design:
Data Analysis
- Process: Managing the large volume of textual data collected.
- Key Techniques:
- Coding: The initial stage of breaking down the text (line-by-line, paragraph-by-paragraph) and assigning labels (codes) to segments of data.
- Content Analysis: A systematic process to apply significance or meaning to the text and identify patterns, often involving grouping codes into broader categories (Wilkinson & Birmingham, 2003).
- Thematic Analysis: Identifying, analyzing, and reporting recurring patterns (themes) within the coded data.
USES
- In-Depth Exploration:
- Essential for obtaining a detailed understanding of complex issues, experiences, and motivations.
- Qualitative Research:
- The primary instrument for collecting rich, qualitative data on beliefs, feelings, and personal accounts.
- Initial Research:
- Used to explore a topic where little is known, helping to formulate hypotheses or design subsequent quantitative instruments.
- In-Depth Exploration:
