      1. The story takes place in Charleston, North Carolina for the majority of the book.

        1. Teenie
          1. Teenie is very gentle because she acts as though she were the girls' mother and never gets mad when they do something wrong, she just teaches them the right thing to do.
            1. She is also very caring because she wants the best for everyone else before she worries about what she wants. She always cares for the others on the plantation by bringing them extra food, or helping them with their jobs.
          2. Polly
            1. Polly is very mouthy because she can never stop talking back to her master, Mr. Derby.
              1. Although, she is very understanding about Amari's situation and helps her with her adjustment to being a slave in America.
            2. Amari
              1. Amari is very confused throughout the book. She does not understand why she was taken from her home village and sent to be a slave in America. She is always confused about why all the African people are treated so poorly .
                1. Though, Amari is very strong. She does not hesitate to do why she thinks is right for herself. She stays strong throughout the entire process of being captured, sold, and abused at the plantation.
            3. Main Conflict
              1. Problem: Amari has to adjust to a whole new life.
                1. Cause: Amari is stolen from her African village to be a slave in America
              2. Theme
                1. Message: It is hard to build yourself back up, when everything is taken from you.
                  1. How brought out in my book: Amari has such a hard time starting her slave life in American, when all her friends and family were completely removed from her life. She finds it hard to forget about all the terror of having nothing.
