Isotopes

  1. Isotopes are atoms from an element that have the same proton and electron numbers but a different neutron number

    • Carbon has 3 isotopes - Carbon 12, Carbon 13, Carbon 14
    • The change in the neutron number does not change the element or its chemical properties
    • Protons - determine the type of element
    • Electrons - determine the chemical properties
  2. Relative atomic mass

    • The average mass of all isotopes of an element
      • ((relative isotopic mass 1 x %) + (relative isotopic mass 2 x %)) / 100
    • Group number - electrons in outer shell
    • Period number - number of shells
