Map content

Atoms, Compounds and Isotopes

  1. Periodic Table Numbers

    • Mass Number: Total number of protons and neutrons
    • Atomic Number: Number of Protons
  2. Compounds

    • Chemically Bonded
    • Difficult to separate the two original elements
    • ^^Examples of compounds^^
  3. Isotopes

    • They are the same element
    • They have a slightly different amount of neutrons
    • Same number of protons and electrons
  4. Ionic Bonding

    • If the atom nearly has a full shell it will gain an electron.
    • If the atom doesn't have a very full shell then it will lose an electron
    • Ionic compounds have a REGULAR LATTICE structure
    • Ionic Properties
      • They have high melting/boiling points due to strong attraction between ions
      • They carry and electric current when melted. This is because the ions are free to move
      • They dissolve easily in water. This also allows for electric current to flow through it because of the free ions.
  5. Ions and formulas

    • Atoms that have lost or gained electrons are ions
    • Positive and Negative Ions
      • Negative
        • Group 6
        • Group 7
      • Positive
        • Group 1
        • Group 2
      • Negative and positive ions can attract to form an Ionic compound
