  1. PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT

    • The Photoelectric Effect suggests light acts as a particle - electrons don't absorb energy continuously as a wave theory would imply.
  2. WAVE - PARTICLE DUALITY

    • Superposition occurs - particle theory
    • MARK SCHEME ADVICE
    • Electrons can be diffracted, which shows a wave theory
    • Electrons have Kinetic Energy, and can ionise - particle theory
  3. DEFINITIONS

    • A node is a position of zero displacement in a standing wave system.
    • Transverse : Up & Down; Longitudinal : Left & Right.
    • The Doppler Effect describes the change in frequency between waves emitted/ recieved between a moving source and a stationary detector.
    • Wavelength is the shortest distance between two adjacent crests on a wavefront
    • Line Spectra are the light emissions caused by electrons falling to lower energy levels.
    • Standing waves are defined as the interference patterns created by the superposition of a reflected continuous wave with it's incident wave.
    • Energy levels are the fixed amounts of energy that an atom or electron can have.
  4. REFRACTION & DEFRACTION

    • The energy is dissapated; waves with large wavelengths are rarely diffracted by hills or buildings etc.
    • Defraction is largest when the wavelength is similar to the size of the gap
    • Electromagnetic spectrum (in terms of increasing wavelengths) : GAMMA ~ X-RAYS ~ ULTRAVIOLET ~ VISIBLE-LIGHT ~ INFARED ~ MICROWAVES ~ RADIO
      •  Wavelength is the shortest distance between two adjacent crests on a wave
    • Total Internal Reflection occurs when the angle of incidence > the critical angle.
    • The critical angle is given by the formula Refractive Index = 1/Sin C
    • Red- Smallest frequency , highest wavelength. Violet - Highest frequency , Smallest wavelength
  5. SUPERPOSITION
