C3- Groups

1. Group 1

   • As you go DOWN, metals become MORE reactive, (outer electron is more easily lost as it's further from nucleus)
     • LOWER melting and boiling point as you go down
       • LOW density

2. Group 7

   • As you go DOWN, it is LESS reactive, (it's harder to gain an extra electron because outer shell is further from nucleus)
     • HIGHER melting and boiling point as you go down
       • Coloured vapours

3. Transition elements

   • Good conductors of heat and electricity
     • Dense, strong (more than group 1) and shiny
       • LESS reactive than group 1
         • HIGHER melting and boiling points, (except Mercury)
           • Compounds are very colourful and make good catalysts
