Map content

Atoms

  1. NUCLEUS: In the middle of atom, contains protons and neutrons, positively charged, Most of the mass of atom is inside atom

  2. ELECTRONS: Move around nucleus, Negatively charged, Tiny but cover a lot of space, Volume of their orbit determines size of atom, Have no mass, Arranged in shells

  3. Protons are heavy and positively charged, Neutrons are heavy and neutral, where as electrons are tiny and negatively charged

  4. Number of Protons = Number of Electrons

    • Neutral atoms have no charge overall
    • An ion is a charged atom where electrons are either added or removed
    • Number of neutrons is similar to number of protons
  5. Each Element has a different number of protons
