Spread sheet Concepts

  1. Keywords

    • Formula- uses numbers or cell references and mathematical operates (+-*/)
    • Function- series of instructions which are pre-programmed in order to simplify complex tasks e.g. V LOOKUP.
    • Variable- the contents of a cell which can be changed e.g. arrival date.
    • Rule- these are usually logical tests which can provide results based on an input. E.g. if(A3>10, “Well done”, ”detention!”)
  2. Worksheet

    • A single sheet within a spread sheet.
    • Work Book
      • A collection of worksheets within a spread sheet.
  3. logic

    • Generally based on the Boolean data type
      • this means options are given and only one can be selected
        • things are either true or false, off or on, yes or no
  4. Queries

    • Simple Query
      • searches for only 1 parameter
    • Complex Query
      • Searches for more than 1 paramater
    • AND OR NOT
  5. Form Control

    • Objects on the worksheet which allow the user to interact without changing the cells directly.
    • E.G combo box , radio button, button, check box
  6. why do we use spread sheets?

    • Interfaces can be adapted to our needs
    • Calculations are carried out instantly
    • Allows for validation of data.
    • Calculations will be carried out the same way every time this can make it more accurate. However the formulas must be correct in the first place.
  7. Formula Vs Function

    • Formula
      • A formula is typed directly into the formula bar
      • Formulas are simple calculations
      • Formulas do not have built-in wizards
    • Function
      • A function is built into the software.; it is a special type of formula
      • Functions are used to simplify complicated maths
      • A function often has a built-in wizard to help you complete them e.g. VLOOKUP
