1. Dial up

   • Links computer to telephone system using a Modem
   • modem connects to telephone socket
   • Modem can be external or internal to the computer
   • Advanatges
     • Residential phone lines support dial up so can be used if broadband is unavailble
     • Can use in different locations
   • Disadvantages
     • Slow download speeds
     • Blocks phone line when on interent
     • Near impossible to view videos
     • Difficult to download multimedia

2. Broadband

   • Fast internet connection such as ADSL
   • Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
   • ADSL uses existing telephone lines allowing high speed connection
   • Permanently connected to the internet
   • Faster updates, email delivering, better than dial up
   • Advantages
     • Fast download speeds
     • No blockage
     • Internet always on
     • Several devices can run at the same time
   • Disadvantages
     • Speeds vary according to local usage + exchange distance
     • Greater risk of hacking

3. Cable

   • Fibre optic cables provide homes with broadband/television,telephone services
   • Signals DO NOT get weaker if you move further away from the origin
   • upload/download speeds faster than ADSL
   • Advantages
     • Constant high speed link
     • Can be used for TV
     • Very reliable
   • Disadvantages
     • Expensive cables
     • Access depends on location

4. Satellite

   • No cables needed
   • sends/receives signals from earth base
   • Useful in rural areas with no cables
   • Advantages
     • No expensice cables
     • Ideal for remote places
   • Dsadvantages
     • Relies on line of sight
     • Interactive games may lag because of signal delay

5. Mobile communictions

   • Smartphones can access the internet
   • Wireless laptops connect to hotspots (wireless)
   • Dongle = USB that allows computers to access the internet wirelessly. can be pay as you go or connected to your contract bill
   • Bluetooth connects to PDAs wirelessly and use ISP to connect to the internet. Can share voice, music videos and pictures

   • Disadvantages
     • Distance from source is restricted
     • Not all areas have coverage
