C2.11 Miscible and immiscible
Miscible liquids mix completely. But immiscible don't
Separating miscible liquids. they can be separated using fractional distillation
- The mixture is heated and the vapours pass into a fractioning column
- The ones with the highest boiling points condense first
- The different liquids are collected at different parts of the column
- The ones with the highest boiling points condense first
- The mixture is heated and the vapours pass into a fractioning column
Distillation of liquid air
- Nitrogen and oxygen are obtained from air by fractional distillation.
- -185C is below the boiling point of oxygen but above the boiling point of nitrogen
- So nitrogen is collected as a gas and oxygen is collected as a liquid.
- The air goes through a cooling unit at -200C to make liquid air
