  1. Carbohydrates
    1. Source of energy.
    2. Vitamins
      1. A lack of vitamins in the diet leads to deficiency symptoms, such as scurvy, rickets, or night blindness.
        1. Vitamin C helps to keep connective tissue healthy, and it is needed to help heal wounds.
          1. Vitamin D is needed to maintain healthy bones and teeth.
            1. Vitamin A is needed to maintain good vision, healthy skin and strong immunity against infection.
          2. Protein
            1. Growth and repair of cells.
              1. Protein synthesis happens in the ribosomes.
              2. Fats
                1. Source of energy, and they provide insulation and storage.
                  1. Broken down by lipase.
                2. Minerals
                  1. A lack of the correct mineral ions in the diet also leads to deficiency symptoms.
                    1. Iron is needed o produce haemoglobin, found in red blood cells. Iron deficiency causes anaemia.
                      1. Calcium is needed to maintain healthy bones and teeth, for normal blood clotting and to control muscle contractions.
                    2. Fibre
                      1. Soluble fibre can reduce cholesterol, and it can prevent constipation.
                        1. Insoluble fibre helps other foods move through your digestive system more easily. It also keeps your bowels healthy and helps prevent digestive problems.
                        2. Water
                          1. The 2/3 of the body is made of water, and it is found in cytoplasm. It is used to produce sweat (homeostasis) and it is found in blood.
