Atomic Structures - Subatomic Particles

  1. Protons

    • Relative mass = 1
    • Positive charge
    • in nucleus
  2. Neutrons

    • No charge
    • Relative mass = 1
    • in nucleus
  3. Electrons

    • Negative charge
    • Relative mass = 0
    • in shells/orbitals surrounding nucleus
  4. Relative atomic mass = number of electrons + number of neutrons

  5. Different kinds of atoms (different by their masses) within an element, isotopes, but these have the same properties.

  6. ·

    • Smaller number = atomic number = number of protons
      • = number of electrons so atom has no overall charge
        • if atoms of an element gain or lose electrons, they form IONS
    • Li = element symbol
    • Larger number = relative atomic mass
