Failure to Function Adequately - Definitions of Abnormality

Definition:Mentally healthy people operate with a certain degree of self care. The scale of measuring the ability to function adequately if measured on the GAF:100 - Superior function 80 - Open to stress60 - Difficult to function at work40 - Impairment of reality20 - Danger of hurting self or othersFor example: A person not being able to get out of bed would be considered around 55 on the GAF. This means the struggle to function adequately resulting in them being classified as abnormal.

Weaknesses of the Definition:Context variations:What may seem to be failing functioning in on context may be fine in another. For example a loved one may have died and getting out of bed is difficult.Culture variations:Functioning in one culture may be considered different in another. This may be when an Asian is living in Europe and not applying to European culture.Subjective Judgement:Someone may be completely happy with staying in bed until 12pm.
