the three states of matter

solids liquids gases

1. particles only vibate 1. particles swap places 1. particles move freely

with neighbouring particles. in all directions.

2. very little space 2. theres some space 2. theres lots of space.

3. cannot be compressed and doesnt flow 3. cannot be compressed and flows 3. can be compressd

and flows.

changes of state, melting and boiling points and s

Changes of state sate symbols

melting- solids changing into liquids solid (s)

boiling- liquids changing into gases liquid (l)

freezing- liquids changing into solids gas (g)

condensing- gases changinng into liquids aqaeous (dissolved in water) (aq)

sublimation- gases changing into solids vice versa

melting and boiling point

melting point- the melting point is the point at which a solid turns into a liquid

boiling point- the boiling point is the point at which a liquid turns into a gas

elements, compounds and mixtures, pure and impure

elements compounds and mixtures.

element- an element is a substance that is made up of one type of atom and it can not be broken down into anything simplier.

compound- a compund is a substance that has two or more atoms chemically bonded together.

mixture- a mixture is two or more substances together but not chemicaly bonded.

pure and impure substances

pure substances contain a single element or compound and are not mixed with any other substances.

impure substances contain a mixture of different substances.

separating mixtures

soluble- a solid is soluble if it dissolves in liquid

insoluble- a solid that will not dissolve in liquid

solute- a solid that can dissolve in a liquid

solvent- the liquid that the solid dissolves in

solution- the solute and the solvent
