TRANSFER OF BIOMASS
Content of the notes (10)
Page 1
Materials are constantly recycled throughout ecosystems, nitrogen cycle and carbon cycle.
Page 2
Biomass transfer: Transfer of biomass from one trophic level to another.
Page 3
Trophic level: the level at which an organism feeds in a food chain.
Page 4
Trophic level- Producer, first consumer, prey, predator.
Sun, Grass, Cow, Human
Page 5
Inorganic components (mineral ions, excluding water) and Organic components (Glucose) make up and organisms biomass.
Page 6
Energy is captured by plants, as light energy is transferred into chemical energy through photosynthesis producing glucose. The glucose can almost immediately used for respiration.
Primary consumers eat plants, biomass is transferred, this continues up the food chain.
Page 7
Biomass through ecosystems, living organism need to carry out life processes.
Some energy converted into heat and materials are lost in CO2 and water.
Biomass is lost in dead animals and waste materials. Then only available to decomposers, eg fungi and bacteria.
Page 8
Biomass is therefore in lower amounts higher up the food chain.

How factors increase Primary Productivity?
LIGHT BANKS- Increase rate of photosynthesis by ensuring as much light on plants as possible
PLANTING crops EARLY- Allows a longer growing season, which means as much photosynthesis as possible.
DROUGHT RESISTANT crops- Planted because water is a reactant in photosynthesis when glucose is produced.
PESTS- Insects, fungal disease, weed competition- all have to be controlled via use of chemicals as they can reduce the amount of biomass produced.
