Self Report Flashcards
Flashcards do conjunto (28)
- 1Self ReportWays to obtain data by asking participants to provide information about themselves
- 2Rating ScaleA numerical scale on which a participant indicates a choice by selecting one number, so providing quantitative data
- 3Likert ScaleA type of question that measures attitudes using a statement to which participants respond by choosing an option, typically from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree'
- 4Sematic Differential ScaleA scale that allows participants to choose on a scale between two extremes ie. between 'weak' and 'strong'
- 5Open QuestionsQuestions that allow participants to give full and detailed answers in their own words ie. no choices or categories are given
- 6Closed QuestionsQuestions that offer a small number of explicitly stated alternative responses and no opportunity ie. expand on answers
- 7Quantitative DataNumerical data that tells you how much there is of something
- 8Discreet Quantitative DataData you count
- 9Continuous Quantitative DataData you measure
- 10Qualitative DataData representing how things are expressed ie. feelings and thoughts represented in words
- 11QuestionnaireA self-report method that uses written questions
- 12Structured QuestionnaireQuantitative method of research that utilises closed questions and Likert Scales
- 13Unstructured QuestionnaireQualitative method of research that utilises open questions
- 14Demand CharacteristicsFeature of an experiment which helps participants to work out what is expected of them and influences their behaviour
- 15Structured InterviewsUtilises pre-planned questions from a checklist
- 16Unstructured InterviewsAllows the interviewer much greater scope to ask questions about a particular topic or issue
- 17Test-Retest ReliabilityParticipants do a test and at a later date do it again. If the two tests have consistent scores then the test has internal reliability
- 18Split-Half ReliabilitySplitting the test in half, with each participant completing both halves. If the two halves provide consistent results then it suggests that the test has internal reliability
- 19ValidityThe extent to which a test or tool measures what it claims to measure
- 20Ecological ValidityHow true a study is to natural/real life
- 21Face ValidityWhether the test or self report looks as though it measures what it claims to measure
- 22Construct ValidityHow well a test measures the constructs (skill/attribute/ability) it was designed to measure
- 23Concurrent ValidityWhether a new test generates results that are consistent with those of an existing test that claims to measure the same thing
- 24Population ValidityWhether the sample gathered is an accurate measure of the target population
- 25Random SampleA sample in which any member of the population has an equal chance of being selected
- 26Volunteer SampleParticipants sign up to be part of the research, usually responding to adverts
- 27Opportunity SampleTaking a sample from whoever was there and able to do it at the time
- 28Snowball SampleAn approach for finding information-rich key informants. This is done by asking respondents if they know of anyone with the right characteristics
