- 1What was Inoculation and why did people use it?- Inoculation was when a small amount of pus was taken from a small pox blister and spread into a cut of a person who hasn't yet had smallpox, so that they develop a mild version of smallpox
- They did this because once this person had the mild version they would be immune to the scary version - 2What were the problems with Inoculation?- Not everyone could afford it as doctors charged
-It wasn't always effective or safe and sometimes people would die - 3Jenner's work on the vaccination for Smallpox:Edward Jenner claimed that if someone already had cowpox (harmless to humans) they were then immune to Smallpox
-Found out by giving his son cowpox and then smallpox and finding him immune
- repeated on 23 people + published ideas - 4Why he was opposed?-Procedure didn't always work- as doctors weren't careful enough
-people were scared if injecting something from an animal into themselves
-People = always scared of change
- People scared of side effects
-free vaccinations - doctors lost money - 5Why did the vaccination become so successful?- Scientific method - repetition
- Communication - pamphlets printed
-Government - provided a grant to pay for people to get free vaccinations / 1852 made vaccinations compulsory / enforced in 1871 - dropping smallpox cases hugely
