Flashcards do conjunto (14)

  1. 1What is the treatment for Depression called?Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  2. 2What else does it treat? What does it focus on?Can treat depression, phobias and OCD.
Concentrates on thought processes and physical actions to give patients strategies to improve their lives and change their ways of thinking and behaving.
  3. 3What are the four processes?1. Assessment clarification- work together to clarify problems (where irrational thoughts occur)
    2. Identification of goals
    3. Construction of a plan- to achieve goals and overcome them
    4. Change negative and irrational thoughts- put more effective behaviours in place.
  4. 4What is the first role Beck's theory has in CBT?1. Thought catching- identify negative thoughts (negative triad), once identified the thought need to be challenged.
  5. 5What is the second role Beck's theory has in CBT?2. Reality testing- p's given homeworks to test their negative beliefs and see if their true, this is where the patient acts as a scientist.
(negative feedback- therapist uses to prove patients statements are correct).
  6. 6What is the name of Ellis's therapy?Rational Emotive Behaviour therapy (REBT)
  7. 7In his extended model what does the D&E in ABCDE stand for?D- Dispute
    E- Effect
  8. 8What is the central technique to REBT?To identify and dispute irrational thoughts.
  9. 9Give an example of how this would work.Patient says how unlucky they are and how unfair life seems which the therapist identifies as being utopianism (irrational belief)
-breaks link between negative life events and depression.
  10. 10How would the therapist challenge the patient and give two examples of this technique?Challenge them by engaging in a vigorous argument.
Empirical argument- whether there is actual evidence to support negative belief.
Logical argument- do their beliefs logically follow the facts.
  11. 11What is another technique that can be used alongside CBT? How does it work?Behavioural activation- encourage patient to engage and be more active in enjoyable activities. (provides more evidence for irrational nature of beliefs)
  12. 12What is the study that can support this therapy?March et al- compared the effects of CBT to that of antidepressant drugs and also using both in a sample of 300+ adolescents with a main diagnosis of depression.
Exact same results (81%) for drugs vs CBT, and an improvement in the combo group (86)
Is just as effective and helpful alongside medication.
  13. 13How can this change the public health system (NHS)?Good case for CBT to become the first choice of treatment for depression.
  14. 14What are three disadvantages to this therapy?1. Can't be used as sole treatment- sever cases cannot engage in hard work and therefore need drugs to be more alert and motivated.
    2. success may be due to relationship, could be down to its quality rather than the form of treatment used.
    3. Some patients find the focus on the present and future frustrating, CBT does not involve past events and many want to discuss them.
