Flashcards
Explanations for forgetting: Interference
Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1What is interference?Forgetting because one memory blocks another, causing one or both of the memories to be forgotten or be distorted
- 2What are the two types of interference?Proactive and retroactive
- 3What is proactive interference?Happens when an OLDER memory interferes with a NEWER memory. E.g. a teacher finds it hard to remember your names because they've had to learn so many in the past
- 4What is retroactive interference?Happens when a NEWER memory interferes with an OLDER memory. E.g. a teacher has had to remember all the new pupils names that they find it hard to recall the ones from last year
- 5What was the procedure in the study by McGeoch and McDonald? They studied retroactive interference by changing the amount of similarity between sets of material
Pps learnt a list of 10 words until they could remember them with 100% accuracy
Then they learnt a new list
There were 6 different groups - 6What did they find? The recall of the first list depended on what was in their second list
The most similar word lists produced the worst recall (e.g. 2nd word list with similar word meanings to 1st)
This means that the more similar the memories, the more interference there is - 7Evaluation Supporting evidence: (McGeoch and McDonald)Their study shows support that interference is a reason for forgetting in LTM
Strength as lab studies can control other influences, therefore, the findings are likely to be valid - 8Evaluation Artificial materials?Point : Artificial stimuli
Evidence: Meaningless lists of words
Explain: Lacks in external validity because it's unusual for this task to be done in real life
Link: Weakness of interference theory for forgetting as it would be harder to apply the artificial situation to real life situations - 9Evaluation Strength: Support from real life studies (B and H)P: Support from real life studies
Ev: Baddeley and Hitch studied rugby players. They found that when the players recalled the teams they'd been against, week by week, it didn't matter how long ago their last match was, it just mattered how many games they'd played in the meantime (
Ex: Shows that this theory can be applied to some real life situations
L: Strength as it shows real life application - 10Evaluation Weakness: Time between learning?P: A weakness is that the time between learning in studies is v. short
Ev: Participant may learn one list of words, then 20 mins later learn another new list, and then recall a few minutes later
Ex: This is not reflection of real life, we learn something, and repeat our knowledge, and then recall e.g. in an exam
L: Weakness as it shows the limited application of lab studies to real life
