Memory
RAM: Used as main memory in a computer and it can be read and written to
- Volatile memory: A temporary memory. Requires power to retain its data.
- RAM is slower than CPU cache-faster than secondary storage
- Virtual memory is used when RAM is full.
- Extra RAM can help improve the performance of your computer
ROM: Tells the CPU how to boot up.
- Non-Volatile : Permanent memory- keeps contents even when there is no power.
- Can only be read and not written to.
- Contains all instructions a computer needs to boot up (BIOS)
Storage
- Primary
- Refers to the memory areas that the CPU can access very quickly
- Secondary
- Where all data is stored when not in use
- Tertiarty
- Used for storing data for long term purposes
- What to look for when choosing s.s
- Capacity
- Speed
- Durability
- Portability
- Reliabilty
- Hard disk drive: traditional internal storage in PC's and laptops.
- Data is stored magnetically in small areas called sectors.
- Solid state drives are storage devices with NO MOVING PARTS
- Have a faster read/write time than HDDS.
- Optical Disk
