1. Kaiser (Autocrat Dictator) lost support of the armed forces (in Hanover)

   • Some of the German Navy mutinied (in Kiel and Hamburg)
   • Strikes, protests and refusal to work (in Stuttgart and Munich)

2. British Navy blocked ports, so over 750,000 Germans died of starvation

   • Early October 1918; new government formed
   • Kaiser abducted in November 1918

3. Two million troops died

   • Over 4 million wounded
   • 55% troops were casualties
   • Germany in mourning

4. Germany's debts trebled from 50 million marks to 150 billion marks

   • Germany poverty stricken
   • Germany in anarchy (disorder with no strong authority)
   • Broke, starving, despairing, mourning
