1. 1519 voyage set sail

   • to prove that they were in the Spanish half of the world 
   • born in 1480, experienced Portuguese sailor
     • wanted to sail down the coast of america cross the oceans and claim islands for spain
       • miscalculated the size of the ocean he planned to cross
         • King Charles of Spain sponsored the voyage

2. FIVE SHIPS

   • Trinidad  the Concepcion   San Antonio  the Santiago  Victoria
   • crew of 270 men
     • Sailed down coast of south america spent winter months in port st julian
       • Spanish men didn't like being commanded by a Portuguese they revolted Magellan crushed the attempted mutiny
         • soon after one of his ships Santiago was wrecked during a storm the crew made it safely back to port st julian

3. found a passage of straits

   • San Antonio deserted and returned to spain
     • Reached pacific ocean ran out of food over 100 men died of scurvy
       • Reached a group of islands got involved in tribal war
         • On April 26th 1521 Magellan was killed in battle
           • Remaining crew sailed on to the spice islands
             • On September 1522 the Trinidad captained by Sebastian del cano with 18 survivors on board reached spain. they were all that remained of 270 men
               • they were the first to sail around the world
