According to The Economist, a democratic country has free and fair elections, the government is supported by its citizens, citizens have an active role in politics and are included, governmental checks and balances, and freedom of expression for citizens. They ranked Norway as the most democratic country in 2017, followed by Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Denmark. The UK was 14th. This means Norway is a democratic country, while North Korea, which was ranked in the top five of the least democratic countries, along with Chad and Syria for example, are known as non democratic countries.
