Bacteriophage: only uses bacteria to replicate

Recognition: the virus possesses proteins on its surface that fit precisely with receptors on the host cell. This recognition step is crucial for the virus to initiate infection and gain entry into the cell.

Lock and Key: once the virus has successfully recognized and attached itself to the host cell, it employs a "lock and key" mechanism to facilitate entry. This involves the virus triggering a series of molecular events that enable it to fuse with the cell membrane or be engulfed by the cell. This process allows the virus to breach the cell's protective barriers and gain access to the interior.

Entry Method: some viruses directly inject their genetic material into the host cell, bypassing the need for entry via fusion or endocytosis. Others release their genetic material into the host cell's cytoplasm after fusion with the cell membrane or following endocytosis. Once inside, the virus hijacks the host cell's machinery to replicate and produce more viruses, leading to the spread of infection.
