  2. 2semantic memoryExplicit memory of facts and general knowledge; one of our two conscious memory systems.
    (The other is episodic memory)
  3. 3semantic networkA semantic network refers to a model of how concepts are organized in the mind. They are composed of nodes (representing concepts) and links (representing the relationships between those concepts). This approach to understanding memory focuses on how different pieces of knowledge are connected.
  4. 4episodic memoryExplicit memory of personally experienced events; one of our two conscious memory systems.
    (The other is semantic memory)
  5. 5hippocampusA neural centre located in the limbic system. It helps process explicit (conscious) memories - of facts and events -for storage.
  6. 6memory consolidationThe neural storage of a long-term memory.
  7. 7cerebellumThe cerebellum is a major structure of the hindbrain that is located near the brainstem.
The cerebellum plays a key role in forming and storing the implicit memories created by classical conditioning. Implicit memory formation needs the cerebellum.
  8. 8basal gangliaThe basal ganglia is a group of deep brain structures involved the formation of our procedural memories for skills.
They are involved in the process of performing tasks without conscious awareness, such as riding a bicycle or playing a musical instrument. The basal ganglia help in the automation of these skills by linking sequences of actions into smooth, habitual routines.
  9. 9infantile amnesiaOur conscious memory of our infancy (first four years of life) is essentially blank.
Two factors contribute to infantile amnesia:
We index much of our explicit memory with a command of language that young children do not possess.
The hippocampus is one of the last brain structures to mature, and as it does, more memory is retained.
  10. 10flashbulb memoryA clear, sustained memory of an emotionally significant moment or event.
