Flashcards do conjunto (24)
- 1What are the experimental methods?- Laboratory
- Field
- Natural - 2What are the non-experimental methods?- Correlational analysis
- Observational techniques
- self-report techniques: questionnaires and interviews
- case studies - 3Define aimis a general statement outlining at the research intends investigate.
- 4Define independent variableThe variable being changed/manipulated.
- 5Define dependent variableThe variable being influenced by the IV
- 6Define extraneous variablea variable other than the IV which has influenced the DV
- 7Define co-variablestwo variables which are examined to see whether a correlation exists between them.
- 8What are the Extraneous Variables?- Participant variables
- Situational variables
- Demand characteristics
- Investigator effects
- Order effects - 9Define Participant variablesAre related the participants involved; they are only an issue when different participant are used in each condition. for example: gender, age, intelligence ect...
- 10Define Situational variablesare related to the research situation and may influence participant behaviours. For example: tempter, noise, time of day.
- 11Define Demand characteristicscan occur as participants are often aware of the fact they are taking part in an experiment causing them to act differently and act how they think they should act.
- 12Define Investigator effectscan occur if the investigator gives out clues about the true aim of the research.
- 13Define Order effectsrefers to the order in which participants complete conditions. improved performance in the second condition could be due to practise or do not so good due to boredom.
- 14How do you control the extraneous variable Participant variables?use a repeated measures or a matched pairs design
- 15How do you control the extraneous variable situational variable?Use standardised procedures
- 16How do you control the extraneous variable demand characteristics?use a single blind design
- 17how do you control the extraneous variable investigator effects?use a double blind design
- 18how do you control the extraneous variable order effects?use counterbalancing
- 19Define hypothesisa testable statement which makes a prediction about the results
- 20Define experimental hypothesispredicts that, for example, the IV will have an effect on the DV, or that the co-variables are related. Also they can be directional or non-directional
- 21Define null hypothesispredicts that the results have come about through chance, for example, the IV has not had an effect on the DV, or that the co-variables are not related
- 22Define directional hypothesesThe direction of the results is predicted, e.g. that one group of participants will score higher than the other, or that a negative correlation will be found.
- 23Define non-directional hypothesisdoes not predict the direction of the results, e.g. that a difference will be found without stating in which direction
- 24Define operationalising variablesmeans defining the variables clearly so that they can be objectively manipulated or measured.
