Electron Configurations

Slides in this set (14)

  1. Valence Electrons

    • Valence Electrons (ve-) are electrons in the atom's highest outermost orbital.
    • Valence Electrons
  2. Quantum Numbers

    • Principle Quantum Number/Principle Energy Levels (n) indicates the relative size and energies of atomic orbitals.
    • As the n increase, the orbital becomes larger
    • Are the major energy levels of an atom
    • "Floor Level"
    • Energy Sublevels / Subshell are the energy levels contained within principle energy level. "Room Type"
    • Atomic Orbital is a three-dimensional region around the nucleus of an atom that describes the electron's probable location. "Bunk Bed"
  3. Slide 3

    • Electron Configurations
  4. Slide 4

    • Electron Configurations
  5. Ground State Electron Configurations

    • The arrangement of electrons in an atom is called the atom's electron configuration.
    • " Manager Code"
    • Ground State Electron Configurations
  6. Rules of Electron Configuration

    • Aufbau Principle states that each electron occupies the lowest energy orbital available. "Lazy Electrons"
    • All orbitals related to an energy sublevel are of equal energy.
    • The energy sublevels within a principle energy level have different energies such as 2p is higher in energy than 2s.
    • The sequence of energy sublevels within an energy level is s, p, d, f.
    • Orbitals related to energy sublevels within one energy level can overlap orbitals related to energy sublevels within another principal energy level.
  7. Slide 7

    • Electron Configurations
  8. Rules of Electron Configuration

    • Hund's Rule states that single electrons with the same spin must occupy each equal energy orbital before additional electrons wth oppostite spins can occupy the same orbital.
    • "Each wants a bunk bed for themselves before doubling up".
    • Rules of Electron Configuration
  9. Slide 9

    • Electron Configurations
  10. Rules for Electron Configurations

    • Pauli Exculusion Principal states that a maximum of two electrons may occpy a single atomic orbital but only if the electrons have oppostite spins.
    • Clockwise and counterclockwise
    • "Pauli wants 2 crackers"
    • "Bunk Beds each hold 2 with pillows on opposite ends".
  11. Slide 11

    • Electron Configurations
  12. Slide 12

    • Electron Configurations
  13. Slide 13

    • Electron Configurations
  14. Stable Electron Configuration

    • Order of stability from most to least stable.
    • Full enrgy levels (floor).
    • Full subleves (room).
    • Half full sublevels (room).
