QUESTION 2 - 8MARKS | 8-10MINS
- The question will ask you to compare two texts. It has been differences but it can be similarities as well so make sure you read the question. You need to summarise what you find about a similar point in both topics. For example, if the question asks about how the day is presented. You could write in Source A the weather is good and in Source B the weather is bad.
- Two to three paragraphs will suffice
- -Embed your quotations.
- -Cover both extracts
- -Make some implicit points about attitudes of characters if relevant.
- -Make perceptive references.
- -Don’t write about language.
-
- You should write about language devices used by the author to achieve an effect or a feeling of a character
- You should aim to write 4 points each with two pieces of language analysis contributing to it. Mention the effect of the language used by the writer in detail.
- Include quotations.
- -Talk about sentence forms: complex, compound and simple.
- -Talk about the effect on the reader, what they feel etc.
- -Make sure you analyse some words individually.
- -Use subject terms accurately - a high grade is not achievable without using them (nouns, pronouns, present participle, alliteration etc.)
- -Take quotes from the whole source.
- -Embed your quotes - DO NOT JUST STICK THEM AT THE END OF A SENTENCE!
- -Address all three bullet points: language, words/phrase and sentence forms.
- -Refer back to the question regularly.
- -Talk about the tone of the piece.
- -Look at the glossary it allows you to infer a great deal about the language.
- -One or two alternative interpretations show a high level.
-
- Question 4 is all about bringing your skills together and showing you have a good understanding of both of the texts. You need to compare their attitudes and compare their methods. This question is the first to have a bullet point in the mark scheme regarding perspectives. Ensure you write about perspectives or your answer is limited to the lowest band.
- Write about perspectives and attitudes.
- Write about language devices and tone.
- Write about both sources and compare them directly in the same paragraph.
- Use subject terminology.
- Embed quotes.
- Make sure your answer is developed as this is a long question.
- Link how your point relates to the question.
- This is how I would structure an answer to this question: (4 points, 6 paragraphs)
- Intro - briefly talk about how you’re comparing the texts.
- Form - how does the form change their attitudes and their perspectives and how they talk.
- Audience - Who the audiences are and what the author could be trying to portray to them.
- Tone/Purpose - what is the author trying to achieve and how do their words induce this.
- Other contrasting things for another paragraph.
- Maybe a short paragraph or line (not compulsory) explaining the attitudes and perspectives you have found during your essay.
-
- Question 5 is the creative writing element of Paper One.You will have to write one of the following: Leaflet, Newspaper Article, Report, Review, Speech, Letter or a Blog. The organisation makes a lot of your marks so make sure your writing fits the style.
- You should have is a smallish list in your head of language devices to use.The 5 I said I'd use predominantly being: Alliteration, Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Anthiesis. If you include these once or twice it will really carry your answer.
- Write about 2 1/2 - 3 pages depending on your handwriting to go over the top. Shorter stories keep the examiner engaged and means they don't end up falling asleep.
