- Atoms consist of three sub-atomic particles-
- Protons
- Neutrons
- Electrons
- Each have their own charge and mass-
- Proton: +1, 1
- Neutron: 0, 1
- Electron: -1, 1/1835
- Where are they found-
- Proton: nucleus
- Neutron: nucleus
- Electron: shells
- Why?-
- proton: nucleus because it has a positive charge
- Neutron: nucleus because it has a neutral charge so it has no overall impact on the charge of an atom
- Electron: shells because in an atom there’s the same number of protons and electrons because opposite charges attract so the overall charge of an atom is neutral.
- Atomic (proton) number-
- how many protons are in one atom of an element
- Also this number also tells you how many electrons the atom has because they are equal.
- Mass number-
- total number of protons and neutrons in one atom of an element.
