2.8 The Operating System
Karten in diesem Stapel (16)
- 1What is an operating system? The OS is a piece if system software which is there to connect other software to hardware of the computer system and let the user control the computer system.
- 2What is the Bootstrap? The boot up sequence, loading programs one at a time.
- 3What are device drivers?Pieces of software that enables manufacturers to write the code once and it will work on most operating systems.
- 4What is a system call?Software will send a system call saying that it's been clicked on and is about to open and it needs a certain block size.
- 5What is block size?Allocated memory for programs.
- 6What is multitasking?`The computer appears to be able to do more than one thing at the same time.
- 7What is a user interface? Its what you see and use to click on and select things; a user interface allows the user to interact with the user.
- 8Name 3 operating systems.Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Raspbian, Android...
- 9What is a multitasking OS?A multi-tasking operating system allows more than one program to run at the same time. A multitasking OS arranges for every process in memory to be executed by the CPU once they are ready, switching between processes from different applications to keep them all up to date, this process of managing operations is handled by the OS scheduler.
- 10Where are multitasking operating systems used? These operating systems are used in most personal computers.
- 11What is a distributed OS?A distributed OS controls a computer cluster, where a number of computers work together as on to undertake a single computer-intensive task. This is a form of parallel processing.
- 12Where are distributed OS's used?In cluster computers such as the Cray XC40 which is used by the Met office.
- 13What is a real time OS?An RTOS is designed to handle input data within a guaranteed time. it has to be extremely reliable and have precise and consistent timings. If two inputs arrive at the same time, a RTOS is able to set a priority to them so that the most important signals are handled first, this is done through a method called priority interrupts.
- 14Where are real time OS's used?A factory production line where robots need to be controlled, a car engine management units where thousands of inputs are received per second, and a washing machine will have a RTOS to handle the various wash cycles.
- 15What is an embedded OS?An embedded OS is designed to handle a specific task on a specific piece of hardware. It needs to work in real time in order to respond to its input within a set time.
- 16Where are embedded OS's used?Cash machines, smart televisions, DVD players, and set top boxes all use a RTOS to control their operations.
