  1. 1Admixtureact or state of being mingled or mixed
  2. 2AusteniteSolution of one or more elements in FCC Iron. Solute is generally considered to be carbon.
  3. 3Deoxidationto remove oxygen from. In welding, elements are added to filler metals to promote the removal of oxygen absorbed by the liquid during the welding process.
  4. 4Dilutiona change in the chemical composition of the weld deposit from the composition of the filler metal due to admixture of base metal or previous weld metal.
  5. 5Electromotive forcethe energy per unit charge that is converted reversibly from chemical, mechanical, or other forms of energy into electrical energy in a conversion device such as a battery or dynamo.
  6. 6EmbrittlementLoss of ductility
  7. 7FerriteIn steel, a solid solution of carbon in BCC iron. There are two ferrite regions on the iron-iron carbide equilibrium diagram, separated by an Austenite area The upper ferrite is referred to as "Alpha Ferrite"
  8. 8Fusion boundarythe junction between metal which has been melted and the unmelted base metal.
  9. 9HardnessIn mteals; resistance of a metal to plastic deformation usually by indentation. In some ways a measure of the material to flow with out fracturing.
  10. 10Martensitea phase of steel formed by transformation of Austenite below the usual transformation temperature range, achieved by rapid cooling. Its appearance is needle like Xtls which are a supersaturated solution of carbon in iron.
  11. 11Supersaturatedto saturate a solution beyond the point normal under a given temperature. In steel; a martensitic structure is considered to be supersaturated with BCC iron atom.
  12. 12Toughnessability of a material to resist the growth of a crack
  13. 13Temperprocess of heat treating, which is used to increase the toughness of iron-based alloys.
Heating the metal to some temperature below the critical point for a certain period of time, then allowing it to cool in still air.
Reheating hardened steel to some temperature below the eutectoid temperature to decrease hardness and/or increase toughness.
  14. 14PWHT/AnnealingAnnealing is a rather generalized term. Annealing consists of heating a metal to a specific temperature and then cooling at a rate that will produce a refined microstructure.
The rate of cooling is generally slow. Annealing is most often used to soften a metal for cold working, to improve machinability, or to enhance properties like electrical conductivity.
  15. 15NormalizeNormalizing is a technique used to provide uniformity in grain size and composition throughout an alloy.
The term is often used for ferrous alloys that have been austenitized and then cooled in open air.
Normalizing not only produces pearlite, but also sometimes martensite, which gives harder and stronger steel, but with less ductility for the same composition than full annealing.
  16. 16Stress RelievingStress relieving is a technique to remove or reduce the internal stresses created in a metal.
These stresses may be caused in a number of ways, ranging from cold working to non-uniform cooling.
Stress relieving is usually accomplished by heating a metal below the lower critical temperature and then cooling uniformly.
Heating to a suitable temperature, holding long enough to reduce residual stresses, and then cooling slowly enough to minimize the development of new residual stresses.
  17. 17InductanceAbility of a circuit or device to produce induction. Where induction is the production of an electric current in a conductor by variation of a magnetic field in its vicinity.
    Only occurs in AC circuits.
  18. 18SaturationState at which the material has become fully magnetized
  19. 19ReactanceThe effect of inductance and capacitance ADDS REACTANCE to the circuit in addition to the resistance associated with resistors in the circuit.
  20. 20ImpedenceThe effect of reactance in a circuit.
  21. 21Power FactorRatio of actual electrical power delivered to AC circuit, to the APPARENT power.
