Brain scanning techniques

Karten in diesem Stapel (17)

  1. 1What are the main scanning techniques?fMRI, EEG, ERP, post mortem
  2. 2What do fMRI's detect?Changes in the blood oxygenation and flow that occur as a result of neural activity
  3. 3What does the fMRI produce?3 D images showing which parts of the brain are involved in a particular mental process
  4. 4What do EEG's measure?Brainwave patterns - calculates overall account of brain activity via electrodes
  5. 5What is an ERP?- A statistical averaging technique, extraneous brain activity filtered out of EEG
    - This leaves responses to specific stimulus of a task
  6. 6What is a post mortem?Analysis of the brain after death - parts of the brain are examined
  7. 7What technique does this image show?EEGWhat technique does this image show?
  8. 8What scan shows this kind of image?fMRI scanWhat scan shows this kind of image?
  9. 9What is this technique called?Post mortemWhat is this technique called?
  10. 10Strength of FMRI's?They are not harmful to the body - doesnt use radiation
(also has high resolution images, shows clearly how the brain activity is localised)
  11. 11Weakness(es) of FMRI's?- Very expensive compared to other techniques
    - The temporal resolution is poor because there's a 5 second lag
    - Only looks at blood flow in the brain, cannot home in on individual neurons
  12. 12Strengths of EEG's?- Good at diagnosing conditions like epilepsy
    - Unlike FMRI, it has good temporal resolution
  13. 13Weaknesses of EEG's?- Very general, not useful for pinpointing exact source of activity
  14. 14Strength of ERP's?- Gives precise measurement of cognitive functions
  15. 15Weakness of ERP's?- Lack of standardisation in methodology between studies so it's hard to confirm findings
    - Also its difficult to remove the extraneous material needed - e.g. background noise
  16. 16Strengths of post mortem?- Vital for early understanding of mental process
    - Broca and Wernicke relied on post mortems
  17. 17Weaknesses of post mortems?- Cannot find cause and effect because the brain is dead
    - Also raise ethical issue of patient consent before death e.g. HM lost his memory
