  1. 1WHO CREATED THE WORKING MEMORY MODEL?Baddeley and Hitch
  2. 2FEATURES OF THE WMMThe model is a development of the multi-store model and suggests that the STM isn't a unitary store as it has several components.
  3. 3WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE WMM?Central Executive
    Episodic Buffer
    Phonological Loop
    Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad
  4. 4WHAT IS THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE?Acts as the 'boss' as it coordinates other components and determines which information is attended to.
It has limited a limited capacity and can process information in all sensory forms.
Directs info into other components for specific processing.
  5. 5WHAT IS THE VISUO-SPATIAL SCRATCHPAD?Deals with visual and spatial information. e.g. shape and colour and is active during visual tasks e.g. reading or forming a mental image
Also involved in tasks such as pattern recognition and deals with what items look like.
  6. 6WHAT IS THE PHONOLOGICAL LOOP?Deals with auditory information and has two parts:
-Phonological store (inner ear) deals with the perception of sounds e.g. speech.
-Articulatory loop (inner voice), allows maintenance rehearsal through silently repeating them.
  7. 7WHAT IS THE EPISODIC BUFFER?Proposed in 2000 as an additional subsystem .
Acts as a general storage facility which combined information from all the other components.
  8. 8STRENGTH: DUAL TASK METHODAn experiment where ppts were asked to perform two tasks at the same time. An auditory task and a verbal task answering true or false to various questions
They found that as the number of digits increased they didn't make any more errors in the verbal reasoning tasks as the number of digits increased.
Supports the idea that there are different components as verbal task used the central executive & the digit span task used the phonological loop.
  9. 9STRENGTH: BEST EXPLANATIONA strength of the Working Memory Model is that it gives the best current explanation of how STM works.
The model explains why it is possible to simultaneously complete two tasks that require components and why it is not possible to complete two tasks that require the same system.
  10. 10STRENGTH: SUPPORT FROM PET SCANSA strength of the Working Memory Model is that it has support from PET scans which show brain activity occurring in different areas when individuals are carrying out different tasks supporting the idea of several components.
  11. 11STRENGTH: K.F CASE STUDYA strength of the Working Memory Model is that it has support from case studies such as K.F who had damaged STM but no problems with his visual or audio stores.
This provides evidence that the different components proposed by the WMM do exist as it demonstrates that the articulatory loop can be damaged without the Central Executive or Visuo-spatial scratchpad being impaired.
  12. 12WEAKNESS: HARD TO STUDYA limitation of the WMM is that STM is difficult to study due to its limited duration. This means that findings may not be valid or provide proof that it is accurate.
  13. 13WEAKNESS: CENTRAL EXECUTIVEVery little is known about the central executive as its extremely hard to study
This is a limitation because the Central Executive is believed to be the most important component of working memory yet we know least about it.
