Grant et al study
Karten in diesem Stapel (6)
- 1Grant et al BackgroundWanted to further investigate that recall is better when the participant is in the same environment as info is learned
- 2Grant et al AimTo test for context dependency effects caused by the presence or absence of noise during learning and retrieval of meaningful material
- 3Grant et al Sample• Opportunity + snowball sampling
• 8 psych students gathered 5 ps each
• 39 ps (1 excluded)
• 17F 23M
• Aged 17-56 - 4Grant et al MethodStudy conditions:
i) Matching (silent/silent) OR (noisy/noisy)
ii) Mismatching (silent/noisy) OR (noisy/silent)
• Noisy = sound of cafeteria played
• All P.s. wore headphones throughout (even those in silent condition)
• Read short piece of meaningful material (article on psychoimmunology)
• 2 mins later, tested on recall using short-answer test, then on recognition using multiple- choice test. - 5Grant et al Results• Presence of noise or silence during study or test condition had no effect (e.g. in multiple choice test – both scored 14.3 (mean)
• HOWEVER, performance better in matching conditionings than mismatching (e.g. silent/noisy and noisy/silent both scored 12.7 compared to 14.3) - 6Grant et al Conclusions1) There was no independent effect of noise on performance. Claim made by students “noise doesn’t affect their capacity to study” supported
2) HOWEVER, as context dependency affects retrieval, students should revise in quiet surroundings, same as exams
