- 1In relation to Piaget, what is SPCF?the childhood stages of cognitive development. sensorimotor (0-2), preoperational (2-6), concrete operational (7-12), formal operational (12-).
- 2what is sensorimotor?this is the first stage of Piagets cognitive development. it is intelligence through movement/action. the child interacts with the world by manipulating the objects in their environment. the child gains knowledge through their senses and movement
- 3what is preoperational?this is the second stage of Piagets theory of cognitive development. occurs between ages of 2-6. at this stage children become aware of language as they are capable of symbolic functioning and are able to manipulate symbolically.
- 4what is concrete operational?this is the third stage. occurs from 7-12 logic and reasoning develop at this stage but there is still object permanence.
- 5what is formal operational?this is the final stage of Piaget's cognitive development from the age of 12 onwards. humans can think in an abstract, logical way about ideas or hypothetical events.
- 6what are schema?these are knowledge structures that piaget believed were important in cognitive development. they are organised knowledge of the world according to an objects attributes and features.
- 7what are the learning processes according to piaget?assimilation and accommodation
- 8what is assimilation?it is interpreting new experiences based on pre-existing schemas
- 9what is accommodation according to piaget?it is when the child modifies their schema to accommodate the new information in order to learn and adapt.
- 10what is equilibrium in piaget's terms?equilibrium is a process that occurs when a child can fit their schemas in with new information and it results in assimilation.
- 11what is disequilibirum according to piaget?disequilibrium occurs when a child can not fit their schemas into new information, and tension occurs. the child must search to understand the situation and this will result in accommodation
- 12what are Vygotskys stages of development?PNPI, primitive, naive, private speech, ingrowth.
- 13what are the levels of cognitive development?level 1 and level 2
- 14what is level 1 of cognitive development?level 1 is actual cognitive development, which is when the child learns and acts on their own and is able to perform cognitive tasks independently. i.e standardised tests
- 15what is level 2 of cognitive development?this is potential cognitive development, which is the tasks the child can do with the help of more knowledgable others.
- 16what is meant by Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development?it is the distance between the actual cog development level independently and the potential development level guided by more knowledgeable others
- 17what is Vygotsky's scaffolding?Scaffolding is when a MKO guides and supports a child in learning a complex task that they would have not been able to complete otherwise. the MKO adjusts the scaffold according to the childs developmental needs.
- 18what are benefits of scaffolding?provides structure for child, aids them in complex tasks, extends range, selectively helps in areas
- 19how to estimate zone of proximal development?demonstrate task and see what they comprehend, begin task and see if child can complete steps, have child cooperate with a child who understands it more
- 20what did Vygotsky mean by Community of Inquiry?the classroom is a miniature culture, the tutor learns from the child and the child learns from the tutor, the child helps the learning of others while learning themselves which creates a community of learning.
