  1. 1What did Lorenz research?Imprinting and sexual imprinting from newly hatched ducklings.
  2. 2What is Imprinting?Bird species attach to and follow the first moving object it sees in its critical period following hatching. If the birds do not imprint within the critical period, they do not attach themselves to a mother figure.
  3. 3What was sexual imprinting?Lorenz found that birds that imprinted on humans displayed courtship behaviour towards humans in future. In a case study, he found that a Peacock that imprinted on giant tortoises would only later direct courtship behaviour towards giant tortoises. Therefore, they had undergone sexual imprinting.
  4. 4How did Lorenz find this?Lorenz divided up bird eggs. Half hatched with the mother in a natural environment, and half hatched in an incubator where the first moving figure seen was Lorenz. The first group followed the mother, whereas the second followed Lorenz.
  5. 5What is an evaluative point of Lorenz's study? The study cannot be easily generalised to humans as the way humans attach to caregivers is drastically different to the way birds attach to theirs. Studies like Schaffer and Emerson further prove this distinction.
  6. 6What is another evaluative point of Lorenz's study?Observations by Lorenz has been questioned, for example Guiton et al found that chickens that imprinted on a yellow glove would later on attempt to mate with other chickens discrediting Lorenz's sexual imprinting theory
  7. 7What did Harlow research?Harlow used a group of rhesus monkeys to investigate attachment. In one experiment, he put two wire "mothers", both dispensed milk but one was covered in cloth whereas the other was not.
