- 1Define Institutional AggressionAggressive or violent behaviour taking place in the social context of a prison or other formal setting, such as a school
- 2What are the two ideas as to explanations for institutionalised aggression?Dispositional and Situational
- 3What is the theory of dispositional explanations for aggression called?Importation model by Irwin and Cressey (1962)
- 4Explain the importation modelCriminals bring in ideas, values and norms into prison with them.
A willingness to turn to violence reflects their life outside of the prison.
Prisoners therefore import behaviours to negotiate the unfamiliar environment of the prison.
So aggression is the result of characteristics in the person - 5What is the research support for the importation model?Delisi et al (2011)
Procedure: studied 813 delinquent juveniles in California, some of which had negative dispositional factors such as drug abuse
Findings: Inmates with negative dispositional factors weer more likely to engage in sexual misconduct etc. - 6Evaluate the role of dispositional factors on aggressionResearch Support: Camp and Gaes (2005) studied 561 inmates with similar histories in prisons. They found that 33% in low security prisons and 36% in high security prisons were involved in aggressive violence. Result was not significant, shows that situational factors did not matter
Alternative explanation: Dilulio (1999) claimed that the model ignores the role of prison officials. Proposed the ACM instead - 7What is the theory of situational explanations for aggression called?Deprivation model by Clemmer (1958)
- 8Explain the deprivation modelAggression is caused by harsh conditions (such as lack of heterosexual relationships, lack of freedom and lack of goods) leads to competition that is followed by aggression.
Aggression is also caused by the regime being unpredictable, this leads to frustration meaning violence is an adaptive solution to deprivation - 9Explain research support for the deprivation modelBy Steiner (2009)
Procedure: looked at factors on inmate aggression in 512 prisons in the US
Findings: there was higher inmate-on-inmate violence in prisons with higher proportions of female guards, Hispanic people, African-American people and inmates in for their own safety. - 10Evaluate situational factorsSupporting evidence: Cunningham et al (2010) looked at 35 inmate homicides in Texas prisons, found motivations were by deprivations, such as arguments over drugs
Contradictory research: Hensley et al (2002) found that there was no link between involvement in conjugal visits and reduced aggressive behaviour in 256 male and female prisons in Mississippi
