   • Aural - listening
   • Practical - doing

3. Time Management

   • Make a schedule; List tasks in short and long term
     • It's stressful to put off work
       • Start with simplest task and complete it
         • Now tackle the next simplest.
           • Repeat :)
       • Motivation
         • Re-evaluate your priorities
         • Take responsibility
         • Be honest to yourself
         • Reduce stress; don't put things off till last minute
         • mix fun tasks with work in your list
           • reward yourself for finishing tasks
         • Break big tasks into smaller/simpler tasks
         • Be realistic; don't overload yourself
         • What are you good at? Weave it into each task; makes you feel good.
           • Learn/practice basic skills required e.g. typing

4. Reading

   • Scanning: fast reading to find information
     • Don't try to read every word
     • Use clues on page ; heading, titles etc
     • write the question you want answered before scanning
     • Use to find specific information e.g. Phone number from a directory
   • Skimming; fast reading to obtain gist of text
     • Use to quickly understand meaning of text
     • To Skim-read;
       • Read Title, subtitle and subheading for first clues to meaning
       • Look at pictures and captions
       • Read first and last sentence of each para
         • fill gaps in understanding by reading mid sentences
           • Don't read each word. Focus on keywords
   • If you don't understand, don't despair. Give it time.
   • Close Reading; use for technical/complex texts
     • Start by reading Heading, Title, sub-titles
       • Read paragraph. Rephrase in mind. Did you understand it?
       • Read and rephrase complex paragraphs, sentence by sentence
       • If you don't know a word, look-up its meaning then re-read the sentence

5. Listening

   • Concentrate
   • Take notes; hand write
   • Ask to repeat or explain

6. Talking

   • Prepare what you want to say
     • Introduce yourself and purpose of conversation clearly
       • be prepared to take notes; pen & paper
         • Ask for and note the name of other party
           • Check conversation is convinient for other party. If not, ask for another time.
   • Speak slowly and clearly. Aim to be understood.
     • Never interrupt
   • Be courteous. Thank the person.
   • Clearly indicate end of conversation. Check other party for questions.
   • Phone: Hangup half second after the called party
