KNOWLEDGE

  1. Common ways of knowing

    • Less reliability
      • Tenacity: to believe that something is true because always believed it to be true
        • Superstitions
        • Prejudies
      • Ituition: without relying on either reason or inference. Based on an appeal to proposition felt to be obvious
      • Authority: a proposition could be true because it is made by a respectable person or expert
    • Traditional methods
      • Personal experience: information that people acquire through
        • Interacting with other people
        • Conclude their experience
      • Rationalism: we can acquire knowledge if we use the correct reasoning procedure
    • Higher reliability
      • Scientific method
        • The main objective is to expand knowledge characterized by a theoretical building
        • Elements
          • Hypotesis formation
          • Data collection
          • Empirical hypothesis testing
          • Theoretical modification
        • Ideal for generating reliable knowledge
          • Physical, natural and social sciences
            • Purposes of science: Help to understand the world around us
              • Understanding is the hability to:
                • Description: Describe characteristics of a population or phenomenom being studied
                • Prediction: stating what will happen in the future
                • Control: uncover relationships between causes and effects, and if it is possible to manipulate the causes
                • Explanation: stating why some relationship exist
            • Objectivity: measures the degree to which scientific findings are independent of any one person´s opinion
        • The nature of the Scientific process
          • Theory: a set of interrelated constructs, definitions, and propositions that present a systematic view of phenomena by specifying relations among variables
            • Hypothesis: a specific, estable prediction, derived typically from a theory
              • Verification: scientists assess the degree to wich hypotheses based on theories match empirical data
                • Data reliability: they must be free of random errors
                • Data Validity: must be assess
            • Implicit theories: informal about phenomena that people rarely test in rigorous, empirical fashion
            • Explicit theories: formal theories that are subject to empirical test
