1. A constructivist view

   • Believed kids play an active role in their growth
     • They are involved in their growth through their own experiences
   • Schema
     • Mental framework used to organize data
     • Your current understanding of things
   • Adaptation
     • In born tendency to make sense of new data
     • Assimilation
       • Try to fit new into old schema
       • EX. Family has a dog
         • Dog has 4 legs, fur and a tail
           • See's a cat
             • Has 4 legs, fur and a tail
               • MUST BE A DOG!
     • Accomidation
       • Modify schema if needed
       • Ex Cont. Cat acts different than dog
         • Cat meows, cat does not like company
           • CAT IS NOT A DOG!

2. A Stage theory

   • Thinking in stages, each qualitatively different
     • Universal (same order, different rate)
       • everyone goes through these same stages in the same order but at different rates
   • 1. Sensorimotor
     • Birth-2
       • Infant/Toddler
       • Uses senses to learn
         • Learns cause and effect
           • Gains object permanence
             • Realizes things still exist even if they can't see them
             • Displays delayed imitation
               • Ability to copy actions after the fact
               • This represents that they have internal (mental) representations
     • 2. Pre-operational
       • 2-6 years
         • Tod-Preschool
         • Symbolic function
           • Ability to substitute
           • Explosion of language
           • Pretend play
           • Limits of this age
             • Cause predictable mistakes in problem solving
             • Egocentrism
               • Centration
                 • Irreversibility
       • 3. Concrete Operational
         • 6-11 years
           • Can problem solve with things easily held in memory
             • Can reverse steps in mind
             • Math skills explode
             • Can attend to more than one feature at a time
             • Begins to understand rules/strategies
             • Allows for skill called conversation
         • 4. Formal Operational
           • 12 years and up
             • Thoughts more complex and flexible
               • Can think more abstractly
                 • Discuss things like truth and justice
                 • Can solve hypothetical problems
                 • Takes interest in Science-Fiction
