argue STM has different stores for visual and verbal, so dual tasks are not able to be done efficiently
Central executive: filter for relevant information, oversees and co-ordinates other components, limited capacity of 4 components, more tasks are practised less demanding they are on CE.
- Research- D'Esposito found prefrontal activated when doing both verbal and visual= supports CE is separate area.
Phonological loop: auditory information in speech form (inner voice) capacity of about 2 seconds, phonological store=words you hear. Articulatory process= maintenance rehearself
- Baddeley= P shown 5 1 syllable words then 5 multi-syllable words, Ps recalled more 1 syllable words as takes less time to say them in their head.=word length effect
Visuospatial sketchpad- coded visually (inner eye) capacity of 3/4 objects, visual cache stores visual data. Inner scribe records arrangement of objects in visual field.
- Vogel= 3-12 objects for 900 milliseconds, then shown another either identicle or different, could identify whether 4 objects were same but that was limit.
Episodic buffer- added as CE has no storage, temporary store, also time sequences memories and transfers information to LTm with limit of 4 chunks.
- Dual tasks: Visual and verbal task can hapen simultaneously but not two visual tasks, as interfrere with eachother and performance is reduced, supports that phonological loop and sketch pad are separate.
AO3= Baddeley, showed two visual tasks led to more difficulty than visual and verbal task, supports limited resources of WMM.
- KF support, poor STM for verbal but could process visual info suggesting phonological loop had been damaged
- support for brain scans= Braver: Ps did tasks involving CE, prefrontal cortex activity inceased. shows CE is physical entity
- Lack of clarity over CE: unsatisfactory and doesnt exlpain anything, CE should be more clearly described not just simply attention.
