Flashcards
Resource Security
Cards in this deck (19)
- 1What is a stock resource?Stock resources can be permanently expended
They aren't replaced in human timescales
They include; coal, oil and natural gas - 2What is a flow resource?Resources that can be replenished
May require careful management from humans, e.g biofuel
They include wind and solar power - 3How are resources distributed?Resources are distributed unevenly across the globe
- 4What is a possible resource?Resources that are thought to exist but haven't yet been sampled
- 5What is an inferred resource?Resources that have been identified, but haven't yet been measured
- 6What is an indicated reserve? The size of the reserve has only partially been measured
The measurements are used to estimate the actual size - 7What is a measured reserve? The size of the reserve has been measured and known accurately
- 8What are the steps of resource development?1. Exploration
2. Exoloitation
3. Depletion
4. Development
5. Exhaustion - 9What is a resource frontier? An area with an abundance of resources that are exploited for the first time
They are often geographically remote - 10What is the resource peak? The maximum amount of the resource that is being extracted each day
- 11How can resource use be made more sustainable?1. Using less of the resource
2. Increase recycling so less resources are extracted
3. Finding new reserves or new ways to extract resources
4. Finding alternatives - 12What is an environmental impact assessment (EIA)?It is carried out before resource development begins
It is used to assess the social, environmental, economical and cultural impacts - 13What are the steps involved in the EIA?1. Assessing potential impacts
2. Identifying hos impacts can be mitigated
3. Looking at alternatives to see less damaging options
4. Deciding whether the development can go ahead
5. Monitoring the development - 14Why might resource development take place more in a newly emerging economy? They don't require an EIA. Developments can go ahead with little consideration of the impacts.
- 15Which sources can we get water from?1. Extracted from surface and underground sources (abstraction)
2. Reservoirs
3. Desalinisation of salt water - 16How does climate control water supply?1. Areas with high rainfall have a more reliable water supply
2. Hot climates havd high evaporation. This can create water scarcity
3. Too much precipitation can overwhelm sewers and contaminate water supplies - 17How does geology control water supply?1. Water cannot infiltrate impermeable rock. It then flows into lakes
2. Rainfall on permeable rock can create aquifers
3. Some rocks contain salt, these dissolve in water making it unsuitable for consumption - 18How does drainage control water supply?1. Drainage systems transfer water to different areas. This changes the distribution of water
2. Large drainage basins cover more land, they receive more rainfall so have a more reliable water supply - 19How do human factors impact water supply?1. Rising population is increasing demand and reducing supply
2. Agriculture and industry can pollute water supplies
