Flashcards

Henry

Megan Burnett Vivas MSc English 21 cards

Cards in this deck (21)

  1. 1Henry's signalment and presenting complaintDog, Labrador, male intact, growling
  2. 2What are the triggers for Henry's behaviour?Away from home, inside the home (no specific triggers)
  3. 3Why might you consider PAIN/FEAR of PAIN?Sudden onset
Licks and nibbles himself a lot, especially on holidays when most of the growling incidences occur - chewed all hair off tail
Painful condition may lower Henry's threshold for aggressive behaviour
Henry may have experienced a bout of pain during the first incident on holiday, and now every time he is in a similar environment, he expects pain and sees it as a threat to himself
    Howling at night
    However, already been to vet
  4. 4Why might you consider FEAR/anxiety?'Nervous personality' especially in new situations
Sensitive to loud noises and busy areas
Licking/nibbling may be a coping mechanism for stress or anxiety
Mostly occurs when Henry is away from home, e.g. on holiday or in the car, enclosed space over which he has little control
    Fear/anxiety of unknown situations, insecurity
Growls in the car because Henry has learned the association between going in the car and going somewhere unknown
Fights with other Labrador when away - lower threshold for aggressive behaviour because feels vulnerable/threatened in new environments
First incident occurred in a tent - did something scare him, e.g. loud firework? novel noise? He may associate this with a benign interaction that also occurred at the same time, e.g. some approaching
  5. 5Henry now growls in the home too, i.e. outside of the context it originally occurred in. Why might this have happened?Unconsciously taught learned aggression - negative reinforcement, e.g. Henry growls, owners move away, Henry keeps his personal space
  6. 6Why might you be able to rule out SEEKING attention?Henry sometimes growls when the family are settled and sat around him in the evenings at home. However, the family leave the room when he growls, so it is more likely that Henry's motivation is to increase distance
  7. 7What would you need to know to include or rule out habit?Specific triggers, needs to be a stimulus-response habit, can the owners identify any?
Ask about de-rousal time - they do mention that he takes some time to settle down, sometimes refuses to get out of the car
    Verbal reprimands, e.g. shouting?
  8. 8What would you do in order to address areas of concern or deficiency?PANAS
  9. 9Are there any mood-related issues which are important to the problem? If anxious/fearful, Henry is likely to be in a negative mood state when he growls
Painful may be lowering threshold and making Henry more irritable
  10. 10Are there any temperament-related issues which may be important to the problem?Nervous/fearful temperament, especially in novel situations
Didn't have many new experiences or interaction with people during first year of life
  11. 11What are the constraints on the formulation of the treatment protocol in regards to Henry?Intact - may be more likely to show aggressive behaviour
Hasn't attended training classes so need to find out his motivation levels and willingness
  12. 12What are the constraints on the formulation of the treatment protocol in regards to the physical environment?Only has access to downstairs area
  13. 13What are the constraints on the formulation of the treatment protocol in regards to the social environment?Son and daughter may be less reliable at implementing treatment, e.g. ignoring Henry, not reinforcing the behaviour
May need to be separated from the other dog to reduce risk of fighting during treatment - may be difficult with limited access to space
Better relationship with husband, but husband sometimes restricted to bed as a result of illness - Henry needs consistency in training
  14. 14What are the constraints on the formulation of the treatment protocol in regards to family circumstances?Husband sometimes confined to bed, so many only be able to offer limited support
    No evidence of financial constraints
  15. 15What are the constraints on the formulation of the treatment protocol in regards to client expectations and beliefs?Educate about punishment
  16. 16At which stage of the cycle of change do you think the client is at?Contemplation/preparation - beginning to realise that the behaviour needs to change, mentally prepared, e.g. they are "nervous" about his behaviour, though yet to take any action other than going to the vet
  17. 17What are the risks associated with Henry?Appears to be no risk of euthanasia
    Harm from licking/nibbling himself, infection
    Psychological stress if constantly anxious
  18. 18What are the risks associated with people?Physically injury if growling escalates into a bite, especially risk to children
Mental health of owners, e.g. 'worried about him'
    Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
  19. 19What are the risks associated with property?Something of emotional value may break when the two dogs fight
  20. 20What prognosis would you give this case?Reasonable prognosis depending on owner compliance and identification of triggers - there may be some incidences of growling, but the owners will better know how to react, so that Henry remains calm and the behaviour is not reinforced so as to exacerbate further
  21. 21Give 7 examples of treatment for HenryAvoid triggers in the short-term and continue to ignore the behaviour, leaving the room and no physical contact to manage risk
Review owner-dog interactions and identify moments of risk - assess potential triggers for the behaviour so owners can better avoid them
Counsel owners on risks associated with punishment
    Full medical examination
Anxiolytics, e.g. benzodiazepines (Xanax) been studied alongside clomipramine for fear-based problems
Safe Haven away from main family room - Henry can walk away if he feels threatened, use ADAPTIL spray there
    DS/CC if specific triggers identified
