Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 1Name & Analyze 4 Friar Lawrence quotes-"Thy noble shape is but a form of wax".
    -Appearances can be deceptive
-Wax melts when under fire or pressure, so friar is saying Romeo lacks the strength of a man, he is easily moulded by women.
-Shape means Romeo is no longer like a man & Novle refers to one's status.
"These violent delights have violent ends".
This foreshadows that Romeo's extreme emotions towards Juliet could be disastrous.
Violent= Intended to cause hurt or damage, so love like Romeos is prone to fate
"O deadly sin! O rude unthankfulness!" Repetition & Onomatopia shows how angered friar is at Romeo, and so does the exclamatory sentence.
"Art thou a man, thy tears are womanish".- Context= women are weak. Rhetorical question & Exclamatory sentence hints at friar's surprise at Romeo's behaviour.
  2. 2Name and analyze 3 Romeo quotes-"O brawling love, O loving hate" - Onomatopia & Repetition shows Romeo's emotions The oxymoron shows his inner conflict and turmoil.
"Juliet is the sun" Metaphor shows how much Juliet means to himThe sun is blinding, and his love for Juliet is blinding Romeo—context about how women should control men in this way back then.
"O, I am fortunes fool!" Onomatopoeia & Alliteration shows his fate is sealed, and his frustration, over the fact that he cant control the situation. The exclamatory sentence suggests Romeo is surprised, as he thought things would be easier.
  3. 3Name & Analyze 3 quotes about fate-"I defy you stars!"
Said after Romeo finds out Juliet's death
He openly resists fate, taking things into his own hands and challenges fate.
    -Exclamatory sentence shows anger
Context- Astrology. Meaning of defy - rebel & Challenge.
"From fourth the fatal loins of these two foes" Alliteration draws attention to fatal.
Showing theme early in story= importance
    predetermined deaths seem more tragic
    Makes audience pitiful
relationship was doomed from the start
    Fatal- Causing of death.
"A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life" Pairs come in two, not separated so it's ironic and an oxymoron, as star-crossed aren't meant to be together.
Crossed is past tense, so they were never meant to be together but now are. Verb shows that they still are never meant to be together, it's active. Take their life- They don't let the feud control their lives, they gain control of their own lives.- Double meaning.
  4. 4Name & Analyze 3 quotes related to the theme of love-"Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health" Oxymorons here shows how confused he is with love. He is bewildered, frustrated with strong emotions, questioning how love and hate can exist together.
"Juliet is the sun" Love is deceiving & Blinding
  5. 5Analyze "Bright smoke"-Bright- Light, something that guides you.
    Smoke- Dark, clouds your vision,
so Romeo is basically saying that his parents who are supposed to guide him are making things hard and difficult for him to think straight and see clearly because of the feud.
  6. 6Name & Analyze 4 quotes about Lady Capulet-"Nurse wheres my daughter, call her forth to me" Lack of question mark shows it's not a choice. It's a command.
Nurse is dehumanised, due to lack of name. Context- Status in society
    makes the audience feel bad
Command word shows that she's valued for her services, not for who she is as a person
"Speak briefly." Command word paints Lady Capulet as stern, with little time for her daughter. There's no debate, she must be quick, especially as it's regarding such an important role. Links back to the nurse taking parental responsibility.
"My child! My only life!- She only cares about Juliet after she's died. Exclamatory sentence and short sentence. Possessive pronoun shows she's only now claiming Juliet as her own.
"Here comes your father, tell him so yourself." -Command word shows subjectiveness and fear, typical patriarchal society, she was afraid to challenge or be disobedient to lord Capukets authority.
  7. 7Name & Analyze 5 quotes about the nurse-"Faith, I can tell her age down to the hour."
    Faith- confidence, complete trust.
Deeply cares about Juliet as she goes above and beyond her duties.
Suggests she was present for Juliet's birth.
"God in heaven bless her! you are to blame, my lord, to rate her so" & "Lead her to a fool's paradise" -Shows how protective she is of Juliet, she could lose her job for being rude to lord capulet.
parenthesis shows she pauses to show respect, acknowledging her lower-class place. -Turnt to God as ppl were religious.
"Nurse wheres my daughter, call her forth to me" Lack of question mark shows its not a choice. It's a command.
Nurse is dehumanised, due to lack of name. Context- Status in society
    makes the audience feel bad
Command word shows that she's valued for her services, not for who she is as a person
  8. 8Name & Analyze 3 Lord Capulet quotes-"Hang! Beg! Starve! Die in the streets!"-Command words show he's used to getting his own way in the patriarchal society
Short & Excalamtory sentence shows his anger, he's running out of words to use.
"Am I the master here or you?"- Patriarchal father doesn't like to be questioned. Rhetorical question like he's mocking Tybalt. "My fingers itch". Itching is an uncomfortable sensation that gives on the desire to scratch. His inability to control Juliet frustrates Lord Capulet.
  9. 9Name & Analyze 4 Mercutio Quotes-"If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark."
    Mercutio doesn't believe in love.
Blind, is a block of vision, unable to make a judgement, so love is not a trustworthy thing to follow, because it can't see? But word If suggest Mercutio is unsure and doesn't understand love himself.
    "Borrow cupids wings"
    -Mercutio's wit and humour
-Borrow shows Mercutio thinks love is temporal, it doesn't last. Cupid was the Roman God of sexual love. So borrowing cupids wings suggests Romeo should play God when it comes to love, to have more control and wings, he should be swept off his feet.
"They have made worms meat of me"
"A plague on both your houses"
Mercutio is neutral in the feud even though Tybalt is killing him. Plague is contagious and spreads so Mercutio wants every member of the householders to feel pain.
"Not so deep as a well, nor as wide as a church door, but tis enough". He knows his cut is deep, and it's enough to kill him. Use of simile. Also, religious reference may be a last desperate attempt to save his life by referring to God.
  10. 10Name & Analyze 4 Juliet Quotes-"My only love sprung from my only hate" repetition of word only, emphasizes that Romeo is her only love. Juxtaposition between love and hate shows Juliet's inner turmoil about their romance. and frustration about the feud. Sprung= It was quick and sudden, so because of the feud their relationship is surprising.
    "Beautiful tyrant, fiend angelical"
Field is a demon or evil spirit.
So oxymoron shows her conflicting emotions over Romeo killing Tybalt.
"I beseech you on my knees". Juliet is kneeling, so she's showing submission, and feeding her father's power and authority. Beeseech= she's pleading/begging. Kneeling makes someone smaller. Context about a patriarchal society.
"My bounty is as boundless as the sea." Simile here is used to reinforce how great Juliet's love is. It's endless. It's deep.
  11. 11Name & Analyze 3 Benvolio quotes-"I do but keep the peace". Verb keep shows that this is Benvolios role, he's actively doing it and will do it. This is ironic as Benvolio is surrounded by violence so should be influenced by it.
"Part fools, put up your swords." - Command shows Benvolio's authority. Benvolio is against violence.
"Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do."- Benvolio mimicks Jesus' famous words whilst he was dying on the torture stake. Religious imagery shows that he is turning to God for help and context about religion and the Renaissance.
  12. 12Name & Analyze 4 Tybalt quotes-"Thou art a villan. Constanyly trying to venmt his anger on Romeo. Villan was a big insult in those days, with references to hell. The lack of use of Romeo's name suggests dehumanization and how bitter Tybalt is.
    "Fetch me my rapier boy."
Fetch,= Treating the servant like a dog, shows the status in the Elizabethan era. Command word further supports this. use of the term 'boy' is belittling the servant. Showing more status and Tybalt's arrogance & Pride. Rapier= Sword.
"Peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues and thee." Question mark shows that Tybalt is unfamiliar and acting like he doesn't know what peace is. His hypocrisy and sarcasm. Reference to hell is religious. As hell is a place of torment & Context.
"To strike him dead I hold it not a sin." -Shows his ignorance and insensitiveness to violence. The lack of a comma here shows that he doesn't stop to think twice, he's so sure.
