Atoms

Lily Pritchard Chemistry GCSE English 14 cards

Atoms

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1where is the nucleus?in the middle of the atom
  2. 2what does the nucleus contain?protons and neutrons
  3. 3what is the nucleus' charge, why?POSITIVE - because of the protons
  4. 4where is almost the whole mass of the atom concentrated?in the nucleus
  5. 5how do the electrons movearound the nucleus in electron shells
  6. 6how are electrons charged?NEGATIVELY
  7. 7how big are electrons, but...?very small, but cover a lot of space
  8. 8what determines the size of an atom?the volume of the electrons orbits
  9. 9how much mass do electrons have?virtually none
  10. 10draw a proton neutron and electron table including their mass, charge and locationdraw a proton neutron and electron table including their mass, charge and location
  11. 11what atoms have no charge overall, why?NEUTRAL ATOMS
because they have the same number of protons and electrons meaning the charges of each cancel each other out as the charges are opposite
  12. 12what one is the atomic (proton) number, and what dies this tell you and what does tell you about different elements?the bottom number > tells you how many protons there are
atoms of the same element all have the same number of protons, so atoms of different elements will have different numbers of protons
  13. 13which number is the Mass Number, what does it tell us?the top number
it tells us the total number of protons and neutrons
  14. 14how do you work out the number of neutrons?just subtract the atomic number from the mass number
