  2. 2AlgorithmA sequence of instructions designed to perform a particular task. It is a design for a program.
  3. 3AppletA small program written in java that runs within a web page. Applets are machine independent.
  4. 4Application LanguageA programming language that is built into a package such as a word processor and can be used to control it.
  5. 5AssemblerA piece of software that converts assembly language into machine language.
  6. 6Assembly LanguageA language where each machine code instruction is represented by a mnemonic to make it easier for humans to understand.
  7. 7BNFBackus Naur Form - A language for defining the syntax of a programming language.
  8. 8CompilerA piece of software tat converts a high level language into machine language.
  9. 9Declarative LanguagesLanguages where the programming concentrates on the objectives rather than on the method of solution. Programs consist of facts and rules. Prolog for example.
  10. 10Dedicated KeyA key or button on a device that caries out just a single function. E.g. record button on a video camera.
  11. 11DisassemblyConverting a machine code program back to assembly code.
  12. 12Event Driven LanguageA programming system where components (such as buttons) wait for a users action and then trigger some response rater than going through a predefined sequence.
  13. 13Flow ChartA diagram that shows the design of an algorithm.
  14. 14Global VariableA variable that can be assessed from any part of the program.
  15. 15High Level LanguageA language that allows instructions to be given to the computer without considering the details of the hardware.
  16. 16Inference EnginePart of the software of an expert system that is responsible for deducing the answer from the facts and rules.
  17. 17InterpreterA piece of software that converts a high level language into machine language during execution.
  18. 18Lexical AnalysisThe breaking down of a text file into individual words.
  19. 19Linkage editorSoftware that will join code from library routines and from code written in a different language into a single executable program.
