Flashcards
Atomic Structure
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1Name the three subatomic particles in an atom.Proton, Neutron and Electron.
- 2Where are Protons, Neutrons and Electrons located in an atom?Protons and Neutrons are in the nucleus and Electrons are in a series of energy shells around the outside of it.
- 3What are the relative mass and charge of a Proton, a Neutron and a Electron?Proton: RM1 , RC+1
Neutron: RM1 , RC0
Electron: RM Negligible , RC-1 - 4What is the Atomic Number of an atom? The amount of Protons in the nucleus.
- 5What is the Mass Number of an atom? The number of protons and neutrons added together.
- 6What is the Relative Mass scale based off?An isotope of Carbon (RAM 12). The RAM scale is based off the elements mass relative to Carbon12.
- 7What is an isotope? An isotope of an element has a different amount of neutrons, giving it a different RAM, but not a different Atomic Number.
- 8How do we calculate the RAM of an element? The RAM is an average of the isotopes in a set amount of an element.
E.g. In a sample of chlorine it is found that it contains 75% Chlorine35 and 25% Chlorine37.
So the calculation is: (75x35)+(25x37)=3,550. Giving chlorine a RAM of 35.5 . - 9How does electron arrangement work?Electrons are arranged in 'shells' around the Nucleus. Each shell has a limit to the amount of electrons it can contain.
1st Shell: 2
2nd Shell: 8
3rd Shell: 18 - 10What does an elements position in the periodic table tell us?Group No. = Amount of electrons in the outer shell.
Period No. = Number of shells.
