Flashcards

3.3.2 - Transport tissues

Joe Wells Biology A level English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1What does xylem tissue consist of?Vessels to carry the water and ions.
Fibres to help support the plant.
Living perenchyma cells to act as packing tissue.
  2. 2What waterproof, strengthening compound impregnates xylem walls and kills the cells?Lignin.
  3. 3What're the possible arrangements of lignin? Why is lignin arranged in these ways?Spiral, annular or reticulate.
To allow the vessel to be flexible.
  4. 4How does water travel between xylem vessels?Through bordered pits (places where lignification is incomplete).
  5. 5How are xylem vessels adapted to their function?Dead cells alligned end to end
Narrow tubes so water column doesn't break and capillary action is effective.
    Borderd pits for sideways movement
Lignin in walls for flexibility and support
  6. 6What are the two main contents of assimilates?Amino acids and sucrose.
  7. 7What are phloem cells comprised of?Sieve tubes (sieve tube elements and companion cells).
  8. 8How are sieve tube elements arranged?End to end separated by perforates sieve plates.
  9. 9What are companion cells? The cells which carry out the metabolic processes needed to load assimilates actively to the sieve tubes.
