Cards in this deck (12)
- 1What are the features of a nucleus of the atom?1) it is in the middle of the atom
2) it contains protons and neutrons
3) the nucleus has an overall positive charge because protons are positively charged and neutrons have no charge
4) almost the whole mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus
5) the size of the nucleus is tiny compared to the rest of the atom as a whole - 2What are the features of electrons in the atom?1) they move around the nucleus
2) they have a negative charge (protons and electrons have equal but opposite charges)
3) they are tiny compared to the nucleus, but as they move around they cover a lot of space
4) the size of the orbits (shells, energy levels) determines how big the atom is
5) they have virtually no mass
6) they occupy shells (energy levels) around the nucleus - 3What is always the same with the protons and neutrons in an atom?the atom has a neutral charge because they have equal but opposite charges, which means that the number of protons is the same as the number of electrons
- 4What are the features of a proton?they are heavy and have an relative mass of 1. they are positively charged of +1
- 5What are the features of a nucleus?they are heavy with a relative mass of 1. they also have no charge so there relative charge is 0
- 6What are the features of an electron?they are tiny and very light with a relative mass of 1/2000. they also are negatively charged with a relative charge of -1
- 7What are the electron shell (energy levels, orbits) 'rules'1) electrons always occupy the shells
2) the lowest shells are always filled first (ones closest to the nucleus)
3) only certain amount of electrons allowed on each shell (1st shell 2, 2nd shell 8, 3rd shell 8)
4) atoms want to have full outer shells)
5) when outer shell is not full it wants to react (this is the case with most atoms) - 8What is electronic configurations?how many electrons are on each shell (e.g. 2.8.5)
- 9How many types of atoms do elements consist of?1
- 10What is it that decides what an element is?it's the number of protons in an atom that decides what element it is. e.g. any element of helium will have 2 protons and any atom with 2 protons will be helium
- 11What is the mass number of an element and where can it be found?it tells you the total number of protons and neutrons in the atom. it is found on the top left of the atom in the periodic table
- 12What is the atomic number of an element and where can it be foundit tells you the number of protons in the atom (so the number of electrons to). it is found in the bottom left next to the element in the periodic table
